Mindfulness-based stress reduction

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an 8-week program that trains your ability to bring awareness to the present moment. The simple act of paying attention moment to moment with intention, kindness and with a non-judgmental attitude opens up outstanding new possibilities as we learn to respond, rather than react, to the events in our lives.

Benefits of the practice of mindfulness meditation that have been scientifically confirmed include:

  • Enhances ability to cope with chronic pain and discomfort;

  • Decreases anxiety, depression, hostility and the tendency to somatise;

  • Increases the ability to cope  with both short and long-term stressful situations;

  • Cultivates a calm, attentive mind that is capable of maintaining sustained voluntary concentration;

  • Nurtures a mental state that is conducive to inspiration, joy and creativity;

  • Improvements in the quality of sleep;

  • Increases the ability to relax.

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program was developed at the University of Massachusetts Medical School by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, and has been offered in many different countries, for over 30 years, to all types of individuals.

Throughout the 8 weeks of the course, you will train your ability to be mindful in a number of aspects of your life, including breathing, walking, eating and interpersonal communication. You will also refine your ability to become aware of your inner dialogue, of your emotions emotions and of the associated physical sensations. We will look into the physiology of stress, how and why it manifests itself in each of us and explore ways to manage it better. We will engage in a process of discovery, combining self-inquiry through journaling with group discussions and sharing.

The course has no prerequisite and does not involve adhering to any spiritual or religious idea. Engaging in a daily mindfulness practice of about 45 minutes is required.
